Donna Rose and the Roots of Evil
[A Cedar Harbor Mystery · ] Donna Galbreath assumed that Cedar Harbor would return to its peaceful existence after she and her neighbor, Cyrus Bates, solved the murder of the victim she had found on the beach. But it was not to be. In the cozy mystery, Donna Rose and the Roots of Evil, the community is torn apart when the inept police chief, William Donniker, suddenly dies at a function honoring him. Monkshood, the same poison used in the murder in Donna Rose and the Slug War, was the cause of death. When the monkshood held in the police evidence room is found to be missing, Jake Santorini, the capable young policeman who Donna and Cyrus had hoped would be named Chief, is arrested. Donna and Cyrus find themselves drawn into the investigation when the department is taken over by a sheriff who is convinced the murderer is behind bars. The Chief was generally disliked, but there’s a difference between dislike and hate. As before, practical Cyrus uses his computer skills and his contacts from his previous military experiences to investigate. Donna talks to people. There are secrets, some leading to blackmail. Fiery Donna and meticulous Cyrus secretly enjoy their continuing confrontations and peculiar friendship. Is it possible there is even a spark beween these formerly feuding neighbors? They may not survive to find out unless they can trace the roots of long-ago actions before the killer strikes again. . . . . READ EXCERPT, REVIEWS |
