“Surely you realized I'd notice the surplus of slugs near the loose board, didn't you?” Cyrus's voice from the other side of the Berlin Wall sounded fierce, but with an overtone of laughter.
I couldn't blame him, I guess. I had been both foolish and negligent. “You can take your clodhopper off my arm now. How long have you known?”
“Long enough,”he said, removing his foot. “And it's not a clodhopper. Actually, it's a very expensive shoe. I find it worthwhile to buy the best in footgear.”
“If you knew,” I asked, pulling my arm and the container back through the fence and straightening up, “why didn't you just nail the board?”
“Isn't carrying on this conversation through a six-foot fence unnecessarily cumbersome? Why don't you come into my lair for a change? You might even find it interesting.”
“I don't think I care to,” I said. “I asked you, why didn't you nail the board shut?”
“Because this little charade was much more entertaining, my dear Donna. I knew that sooner or later I'd catch you in the act.”
“But, why?” I wailed.  THIS IS COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL--DO NOT REPRODUCE!
“The days are boring in retirement, don't you find? Anything to liven things up. Life has been much more fun since I moved next door to you.”
I stared at the uneven, graying boards between us. I wished I could see his face. Expressions can be so revealing. Although, if I could believe him, I would be the loser in that category.
“I don't even need to ask why you chose to be so generous with your slugs,” he said. “I know how angry you were about the fence. Believe me, I didn't plan it to upset you.”
“Was that meant to be an apology?”
     “No, I don't think so. I don't feel I have anything to apologize for. You, however . . .”
“That'll be a cold day in hell,” I muttered.
“Donna! I'm shocked. Don't you think we should get together and discuss this?”
“Absolutely not. I wish I didn't have to see your—your puss again.”
“Actually, I find the whole situation laughable. Don't you? I won't hold it against you."
Defeated, I slunk away. As I departed, I heard him chuckle and say what I think was, “Humorless woman.”
Why, oh, why had fate put me in one house and Cyrus, with his rows of vegetables like soldiers and his high fence and his distorted sense of humor, in the house next door? Yes, he did have a sense of humor, I finally had to admit. It was just that it was—it was peculiar. Who else would laugh at my dismay when my neighbors and friends thought of me in terms of a murderess? Who else would think it was humorous to poke fun at me by naming that darling, sweet cat after me because it was loud? Who else would set me up for humiliation when he knew about the slugs all this time? All he'd had to do was admit he knew I was putting them in his yard. I'd expected him to be angry. That was the purpose of starting the whole thing to begin with. To annoy that supercilious man next door in retaliation.  THIS IS COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL--DO NOT REPRODUCE!
Maybe I should put my house up for sale, and remove myself forever from Cyrus Bate's territory. But, no, I couldn't let him drive me away. I was here first. Cedar Harbor is my home. If Cyrus had been angry at me, thrown a temper tantrum as I might have expected, the result would have been that we'd ignore each other in the future and go our own ways. Well, so be it. That's what I'd do now. Ignore him totally. And I'd have what I'd wanted in the first place.
Except, said the little voice from inside that's always telling me things whether I want to hear them or not, he got the best of you.

from D. Merrimon Crawford on Amazon.com  (EXCERPT ONLY)

“Donna Galbreath is a retired school teacher and she is one bad girl with an attitude despite her age! How can I describe this opposite of Jessica Fletcher? Donna is an agitator, a firebrand, cantankerous, an inciter, a mischief-maker (oh, the slug war!), one big nuisance, a smart aleck and a couple of other words too. This sleuth is not your stereotype of a nice elderly retired school teacher at all! This sleuth is a reader's delight.”

“THE NEW SLEUTHS  Long dominated by traitional (i.e. mostly white and heterosexual) tough-guy PIs, sleuthing spinsters, persistent police detectives and truth-seeking attorneys, mystery these days is witnessing an explosion of diverse crime-solving protagonists. From Elizabeth Sim's lesbian ex-reporter/sleuth Lillian Byrd to newcomer Joan Druett's 19th-century Maori American sailor Wiki Coffin, they reflect a growing reader interest in uunusual detectives who break the mold.
    “JOHNSON, NORMA TADLOCK”
“Retired teacher Donna Galbreath of Cedar Harbor, WA, volunteers for the water board, attends historical society meetings, and relocates pesky slugs to her neighbor's garden. After discovering the water board chairman's body on the beach, she notices that the dead man's alienated daughter has returned to town in disguise. When someone poisons the victim's reclusive widow, Donna begins gathering clues—with a little help from said neighbor, a retired navy man. Outspoken, smart, witty, and caring, Donna makes a perfect sleuth. A small town venue, deft characterization, and pleasant narration complete the cozy picture. Tadlock lives in Burlington, WA.”

from Harriet Klausner, All Readers
“This small town cozy is a fun tale due to the wonderful cast that makes for a fine story. The who-done-it (official and amateur) sometimes takes a back seat to the antics of the residents of Cedar Harbor. Fans who appreciate a warm comfy murder mystery with limited action beyond slug droppings will enjoy the teaming of natural enemies Donna and Cyrus seeking to learn who killed Lyle”
from Sue Reider, Mystery Scene
“Donna Galbreath discoveres the body of fellow water board member Lyle Corrigan whiile clamming one morning. When both she and Lyle's widow receive poisoned cookies, Donna, who would prefer to stay out of this situation, becomes involved to protect herself. As a retired teacher and active community volunteer, Donna knows most of the townspeople, and is ideally positioned to search out Corrigan's killer. There are many twists and turns because so many people had a variety of reasons to be angry with the victim.
“Donna is a delightfully crusty character, more than a little intolerant of ignorant people. It's not that she wants everyone to do things her way, but she would like them to, at the least, think about what they are doing and why. Unfortunately she numbers Police Chief Bill Donniker among the unenlightened.
“I was favorably impressed with many of the characters in this book. The author writes about both their good sides and their more dysfunctional traits, producing portrayals of people you feel you know. The solid plotting and the characterizations combine to make a very appealing story, with a fairly outlined, but still surprising, solution. This is the author's debut mystery; I hope it becomes a series, as I would truly enjoy reading more about Donna.”
from Patti Fischer, www.romrevtoday.com (review excerpt)
“A cast of colorful characters provides an entertaining background and sharp dialogue to Donna Rose and the Slug War. The main character, Donna, will remind readers of Jessica Fletcher from Murder, She Wrote as she happens to stumble upon a murder and then goes about trying to solve the crime with the clues presented. The coupling of Donna and Cyrus is gradual, but they are well matched, and they end up forming mutual admiration for each other. The clues are paced well and laid out in between the comings and goings of the citizens of Cedar Harbor and as Donna goes about with her life—visiting friends, gaardening, and receiving a visit from her soon to be divorced daughter Roberta.
“Donna Rose and the Slug War is as cozy and enjoyable as sitting down with a favorite hot drink. You will feel as though you know Donna, Cyrus, and the other characters of Cedar Harbor, as if they could be anyone in your hometown. Norma Tadlock Johnson has provided readers with a well-written mystery and one that will keep the pages turning with its snappy dialogue and quick-paced story line. If you are loooking for a delightful book that will keep you guessing who the killer is, then pick up Donna Rose and the Slug War.
